What is the Enhanced Rider Scheme?
The Enhanced Rider Scheme (ERS) is an advanced motorcycle training program designed to improve riders’ skills, safety, and confidence on the road.
It is aimed at fully licensed motorcyclists who want to enhance their riding abilities beyond the basic test level. The scheme is often recommended for those returning to riding after a break or those upgrading to a more powerful bike.
Course Details
Unlike a formal test, the ERS focuses on a tailored training plan to address specific areas of improvement, making it suitable for riders of all experience levels. The course will include:

-
Initial Ride Assessment – A qualified instructor will assess your riding skills in real-world conditions.
-
Personalised Training Plan – Based on the assessment, a tailored training session will be created to address areas for improvement.
-
Targeted Training – This covers 7 core modules such as cornering, overtaking, filtering, and attitude to riding.
-
Certification – After successfully completing the training, riders receive an ERS Certificate, which may qualify them for insurance discounts.
The ERS is run by DVSA-approved trainers and is a great option for riders who want to refine their skills without undergoing a full advanced riding course like IAM RoadSmart or RoSPA.

£50 per hour for further training.
Course Duration: 5.5 hours (including a 30-minute break)

Morning Session

The day begins with a 2-hour assessment ride, where a DVSA-approved trainer observes your riding in real-world conditions. This assessment covers essential skills such as road positioning, hazard perception, cornering, braking, overtaking, and general control. The aim is to identify areas for improvement and tailor the training accordingly.
Following the assessment, there is a 30-minute break, allowing time to discuss initial feedback and prepare for the next stage.

Afternoon Session
After the break, the personalised training session begins, lasting 2.5 hours. Based on the assessment, the instructor will focus on refining specific skills, which may include advanced cornering techniques, slow-speed control, filtering and defensive riding.
The training is designed to be practical and adaptable, ensuring that each rider receives coaching relevant to their individual needs.

Enhanced Rider Scheme
Core Modules
The Enhanced Rider Scheme consists of seven core modules, each focusing on key aspects of advanced motorcycling. These modules help riders develop greater control, awareness and confidence on the road.

Progress & Use of Speed
By participating in the ERS, you’ll learn to adjust your speed to road conditions, ride within your limits, and enhance your planning skills, especially at junctions and roundabouts.
This advanced training enables you to ride more safely, reduce hesitation, and lower the risk of accidents.

Overtaking & Filtering
The Enhanced Rider Scheme helps riders improve their technique, boost confidence, and anticipate hazards, particularly when overtaking and filtering.
Through the ERS, riders will learn what is safe, legal, advantageous and polite in these situations, ensuring they make informed decisions.

Bends & Cornering
ERS offers riders the opportunity to enhance their skills when navigating bends and corners.

Riders will learn the proper techniques for positioning, and choosing the right line, while also looking for warning signs like road markings, changes in surface, or bends that might be sharper than expected.

Structured Approach to Riding
This module will develop correct and effective use of OSM-PSL or IPSGA for all road and traffic conditions.
It should also include riding with confidence and assertiveness through development of positioning of the motorcycle in order to be seen. Not to be mis-interpretted as being aggressive.

Defensive
Riding
The Enhanced Rider Scheme aims to improve motorcyclists' skills through defensive riding techniques.
Participants learn to react proactively to others' actions, promoting safer practices for a more enjoyable riding experience.

Slow Control
Through the ERS, riders learn essential techniques such as the coordinated use of controls, proper steering, counterbalancing, and effective observation.
Mastering these skills improves overall control and safety, allowing riders to navigate challenging situations smoothly and confidently

Developing Rider Attitude
A key theme in riding is maintaining the right attitude, which involves accepting responsibility for yourself and showing consideration for others.
The Enhanced Rider Scheme (ERS) helps riders develop patience, avoid confrontation, and handle the mistakes of others.
